Who can resist a new kit-build, especially when it’s a nut, bolt, and screw-a-palooza from Tamiya?
The new TXT-2 Agrios is the latest model to get the online build-up treatment, and the wrench-spinning starts now. Let’s have a look at what’s inside the box…
Parts–and lots of them. It looks like there should be more to me, but there’s a lot of loot in the five parts bags, labeled A – E to match the instruction manual.
Never built a kit before? This is what a typical manual looks like. The hardware is shown actual size, and you just put the parts together as shown. It’s not hard at all, just take your time. And it’s fun.
As I open the parts bags, I use RPM parts trays to organize all the bits.
Assembly starts with the center gearbox. In typical Tamiya fashion, the gears are very large and have plenty of surface area for high strength and long wear. Note the large hex insert that supports the output gear. The hex is splined to accept the output shaft. The parts spin on a mix of Oilite and metal-shielded ball bearings.
Dual 540 motors power the TXT-2. They are attached to a single motor plate and spin a common spur gear. The stock pinions are 19T, and there’s plenty of adjustment room to install smaller pinions if you opt for higher-rpm motors or a single-motor setup.
Tamiya includes thread lock with the kit. I like the tub of gel better than the old tube of liquid–the gel is easier to apply, with no waste.
…and here’s the completed gearbox. The aluminum plates are heatsinks and attach to the metal gear shafts within the gearbox.
Next step, chassis assembly. But first, the RCX show! watch this space for more of the TXT-2 build on Monday.
